The D7000 follows typical DSLR design with a deeply sculpted handgrip body. The camera body includes magnesium top and rear covers and overall construction appears very good.

On the back of the camera there is a live view lever/movie record button. The playback button has been moved up next to the delete button.

On the top of the body the continuous shooting/self timer button is gone, with those functions now assigned to a release mode dial located beneath the mode dial on the top left of the body. The C-S-M focus mode selector of past Nikons remains on the front of the camera body at the left side of the lens mount but now offers AF-M as choices. Once in AF mode, push the center button and rotate the main command dial to select continuous, single or automatic AF on the control panel (camera top).

Pushing the center button while rotating the sub-command dial allows you to select the AF area mode on the control panel. The proximity of the release mode and mode dials proved a bit annoying and awkward – changes to the release mode dial are made by pressing a locking button and rotating the dial to the desired setting, but it’s easy to bump the mode dial into another shooting setting in the process. And make sure you’re setting the mode dial according to the white pip on the side of the built-in flash and not the one for the release mode dial atop the camera body.

The 3.0-inch monitor on the D7000 has 921,000 dot composition, is adjustable for seven levels of brightness and offers 100% coverage. The protective plastic cover is easily removed and makes using the monitor in bright light a bit easier.

D7000 Nikon Features

The Nikon D7000 is the ideal next camera for D-SLR owners who want to further indulge their passion for photography with a camera that boasts more advanced features providing creative power such as:

nikon d7000 side lookStunning image details: 16.2 effective megapixels

Whether you want to make large prints or crop tightly in an image, the D7000 delivers the resolution you need. At its heart is a DX-format CMOS image sensor with 16.2 effective megapixels, optimally engineered to gather more quality light through sharp NIKKOR lenses.  Combined with 14-bit A/D conversion (12-bit selectable), the D7000 produces stunning images that are richer in tone and detail than previously possible in DX format. The A/D conversion happens within the sensor, thereby maintaining exceptional image integrity without sacrificing shooting speed or energy efficiency. Combine these with the agile DX format and its signature 1.5x focal length telephoto potential and you can begin to see where this kind of shooting power can take you.

Capture Full HD 1080p D-Movie with full-time autofocus and manual exposure

The D7000 welcomes in a new era of movie capture. It captures breathtaking full 1080p HD movies with full-time autofocus. Besides auto exposure mode, the D7000 offers manual exposure mode, which locks in the exposure value when shooting scenes with varying contrast levels, such as when panning from a bright window to a dark interior.

Advanced movie features also allow exposure adjustment on the fly while recording. The D7000 DSLR offers variable frame rates and resolutions, and can record 1080p at a cinema-like 24fps, or a web-friendly 720p at either 24 or 30fps for up to 20 minutes per clip. Once recorded, users are able to edit and trim video clips in the camera to save time in post production. Whether utilizing a wireless or hot shoe mounted microphone, sound can be recorded via the stereo microphone input for professional audio results.

Improved image quality and speed: EXPEED 2 image processing engine

The D7000 Nikon uses the newest generation of image processing engine, EXPEED 2, which performs multiple tasks with more speed and power. This gives you the freedom to capture the subtle tones of a sunset, and to freeze the action as well. You can expect smoother tonal gradations, even in difficult shadows and highlights, for a greater sense of depth in your images. Focusing performance such as face recognition in Live View mode is also further improved, letting you concentrate on your composition.

Standard ISO 100 to 6400, expandable to ISO 25600 equivalent

The D7000 DSLR continues Nikon’s tradition of providing photographers the confidence to shoot in low light, knowing they will capture high quality low-noise images. ISO 100 to 6400 has now become standard with the D7000. With this ISO range, you can handle a wider range of lighting situations: from the bright and sunny outdoors to low-lit evenings and interiors.

The ISO range can be expanded to a Hi-2 setting of 25,600, which was previously found only in Nikon FX-format territory. Throughout the range, the D7000 delivers sharp images with minimized color noise. Quality high-ISO performance can also enhance a lot for movie shooting, allowing you to capture the mood of a scene using only available light.

Now even more precise: The Scene Recognition System

Utilizing Nikon’s exclusive Scene Recognition System, the camera analyzes subject information from a database containing more than 30,000 images to optimize focus, exposure and white balance. To assist in creating amazing imagery, the Scene Recognition System reads data from a groundbreaking 2,016 pixel 3D color Matrix Metering sensor that examines the scene’s brightness and color data then optimizes the camera’s performance prior to the actual exposure. Another revolutionary Nikon first, this system interprets scene data for improved control of light metering and i-TTL flash output. Additionally this sensor allows for an “Ambient” white balance setting which can be activated to allow warm rendering in Automatic White Balance. With more pixels, the D7000 can recognize even smaller subjects — both moving and stationary. The newly improved Scene Recognition System delivers better photographs in every way.

Wide-area coverage, powerful 39-point AF

The D7000’s strategically positioned 39 AF points cover a significantly wide area of the frame, giving you flexible compositional possibilities. The nine AF points in the center utilize powerful cross-type sensors — especially useful when you need tack-sharp focus such as with portraits and macro work.

The D7000 offers a variety of AF area modes, including dynamic-area AF using 9, 21, 39 points. Switch between the three, depending on the predictability of your subjects’ movement, and the selected AF point and surrounding points will track your intended subject automatically.

An additional feature of the autofocus system is AF fine tune. Photographers sometimes require an extra level of ultra-fine AF tuning. This feature allows you to individually fine-tune and register the autofocus position for up to 12 lens models, then apply that compensation whenever the same lens is attached. You can also register adjustments uniformly regardless of the type of lens used.

6 Frames Per Second Shooting up to 100 Images

The D7000 incorporates a new driving mechanism to conduct its remarkably fast and precise mirror movements, giving you an approx. 0.052 second release time lag and an approx. 0.13 second start-up time. With the feature, you can now say farewell to missed opportunities. What’s more, you can continuously shoot at approx. 6 frames per second at both 14-bit and 12-bit A/D conversion for RAW shooting.

nikon d7000 magnesium bodyRugged and protected: compact magnesium alloy body and sealing against dust and moisture

The D7000 is ready for the outdoors with a top and rear cover of durable magnesium alloy. According to the Nikon D7000 reviews, the D7000 DSLR is dust and moisture sealed and features Nikon’s dust reduction system to remove image-degrading particles from the image sensor. The compact body has also undergone severe environmental tests to prove its rugged reliability.

921k-dots, 170-degree viewing angle, 3-inch LCD monitor

The D7000 features an expansive 3-inch VGA LCD monitor with reinforced glass. It has approx. 921k-dot resolution which assures clear, detailed display of images. It proves invaluable when confirming focus or assessing image sharpness. The wide 170° viewing angle and bright display is a helpful feature for reviewing images or confirming menu settings when shooting outdoors.

Twin SD card slots (cards not included)

The D7000 DSLR features twin SD card slots with SD, SDHC, SDXC memory card compatibility. They offer a number of advantages: sequential recording; recording the same images simultaneously on two cards; recording RAW and JPEG separately onto two different cards; and duplicating images from one card to another. It’s also possible to designate a specific card with more memory for use at the time of movie recording.
